Our favourite places to eat in the Algarve.
We have been to and fro from the Algarve for years now, and there are a few places that are must-eat-eries in our opinion.
First up… the famous
which you must have if you go to the country as they are the best in the whole wide world without exception.
Sardines, one of the things to expect at a top class level in Portugal, fresh, plump and juicy just out of the ocean, the beautiful Sardines in the Algarve are a far cry from the tinned ones we are used to seeing.
These are delicious and so mouth watering you will not want to come home.
Our best place for sea food in the Algarve is Sueste Restaurant close to Praia da Rocha * where the fish practically jumps out of the sea and onto your plate (with a little culinary magic from the kitchen of course! ) With stunning scenery all around, the backdrop is perfect for this dining experience. The host, Amadeu Henqriques, gives free mooring to customers who dock at the marine of Portimao. They also have a great wine list, and mouth watering sweets for afters. This is certainly a top choice for the best food Portugal has to offer.
*If you are staying at Jardim do Vau in Alvor, this restaurant is very close by!
Another great place for seafood is in Lagos at the Convento dos Frades (the Convent of the Friars) – Owned and headed in the kitchen by Joaquim Amores , who’s name literally means love! Amores comes from a long line of Algarvean fishermen, and knows the best way to catch it, cook it and serve it! The grilled Sardinhas here are simply outstanding as is the friendly and traditional atmosphere.
The next thing we love eating in the Algarve is
Piri Piri Chicken
Spicy Piri Piri Chicken, or Frango in the local lingo, will set the senses ablaze! Especially the stuff served in Sr. Frango – they claim to have the best chicken, and we’ve tried and tasted it and can agree, they don’t happen to mention that they also have the best black pork! So delicious we keep coming back. Sr Frango’s is a really lively place too, a hustle bustle of atmosphere with a massive selection of wines and other food items if you’re not a chicken lover. This a great place to eat if you are staying in Almancil or surrounding areas. Here’s a link to some our Private Villas in Almancil.
Pastéis De Nata
Pastéis de Nata are simply delicious! Our favourite dessert of the country’s many offerings. This little egg tart is a gem of flavour, mixing cinnamon and lemon zest in a custard bake – it is something you must try on your trip to the Algarve, but comes with a warning! When you try one you won’t be able to stop at one! It was invented, like many food stuffs, by monks in the 18th century, and has remained a simple, yet moorish sweet treat ever since across Portugal. The best we’ve found is near the gorgeous Praia da Ingrina in Restaurante do Sebastio – a little restaurant on the beach that accepts cash only, and has really fantastic local dishes all at very affordable prices. Here are what some people say about it on TripAdvisor . The closest villas nearby are in Praia da Luz.
Here is a nice little recipe by Portuguese Food on Facebook, if you want to try to make your own when you return!
We would love to hear your comments below on your favourite dining spots in the Algarve, there are so many we can’t add them all here.
Have fun in the sun with some of the best food in Europe!
